Hello, does anyone know how to sex these fish?

I have two that were both 2 inches long when brought christmas eve & the only difference I can see now is one is 6 inches & the other 8 inches.

THe big one beats up the little one & moves gravel all day the small one hides & don't move gravel.

Do they hate each other or are they mating?

Any help is great. Thank you.

justice, I don't think buttikoferi can be sexed by external features. they should be large enough to vent though. the male's tube would be longer and skinnier whereas the female's tube would be short and blunt.

there's no way to know for sure from what you describe of their behavior. the smaller one could just be a sub-dominant male that's trying to stay out of the big guy's way. if the big one happens to be female though then I'd bet $5 the smaller one is as well.

well the big fella has gone to a new home...the new owner who collected it thought they were both femail beacuse of the apparenttly fatter body & face ?!

It was quite hard trying to catch it & now the little one has grown & will also soon need a new home.
