	how to sex tilapia buttokferi

I have two that were both 2 inches long when brought christmas eve & the only difference I can see now is one is 6 inches & the other 8 inches. THe big one beats up the little one & moves gravel all day the small one hides & don't move gravel. Do they hate each other or are they mating? Any help is great. Thank you.

Jason_R_S Moderator Posts: 2811 Kudos: 2421 Votes: 391 Registered: 18-Apr-2001	justice, I don't think buttikoferi can be sexed by external features. they should be large enough to vent though. the male's tube would be longer and skinnier whereas the female's tube would be short and blunt. there's no way to know for sure from what you describe of their behavior. the smaller one could just be a sub-dominant male that's trying to stay out of the big guy's way. if the big one happens to be female though then I'd bet $5 the smaller one is as well.

It was quite hard trying to catch it & now the little one has grown & will also soon need a new home.
