Wouldn't it depend on the current load? If your filtration etc is working easily with plenty to spare then the scenario is diff to if you are a few fish of pushing max density.

Maybe the experts need more info...

Good luck for your research

I would buy them 4 at a time with weekly intervals.

Half the number you would want in the tank eventually.

Then add 1/4 after the water stabilizes and the last 1/4 after it stabilizes again.

Better run the tank for 24hrs 1st. With seeded filter/deco. and biospira. I think EL's are a bad choice, but if you must stick with 4($6-$8 here retail a pop, unless you know a breeder). Any other cichlids or plecos your gonna keep with them? They might be a better choice to start cycle with. EL's are hardy, but mostly only after in "established" water.

i thought u were supposed to put fish and bio sira in at the same time thats what it says on their site. fish keep the bacteria alive. bio spira makes the tank fish safe over night. and electric yellows are a hardy ciclid and thats all i am going to keep i plan on having 20 of them so should i add like 5 at a time? or what the reason im asking is because my lfs is like and hour away and i dont get to go very much so id like to get the tank stocked pretty quickly

20 ELs would severly overcrowd the tank. Max is about 10, usually less. Add about 5 the day you add the bio spira, and wait a week or untilt he water stabilizes. After that you can add 2 or 3 more, and repeat. 20 Would be way too much, 10-12 is already pushing it, even with very good filtration.

Well I think 20 is pushing it(maybe 12-16). NO product will "instantly" cycle your tank. Its a bunch of BS to sell the product. I use CYCLE(same as Biospira), but it only speeds the process. I say 24hrs to stabilize the water. If you must use EL's, do 4-5 for a week or 2. Test water and add 4-5 more. After a month finish your stock. Your going to see "spikes" anyway so to keep your losses at a minimum, do it slowly. I'm not going to lie,as I've had fish safe tanks within 48hrs, but I have alot of tanks and filtration to use seeded "stuff" on new tanks. Just don't push it as EL's are way too high priced and also not that HARDY for cycling.

stallion,
Cycle isnt a very good bacteria starter.
I have found it doesnt work worth a bean.
Biospira is a much superior product.
I also found Stresszyme is awesome, cycled my new 75g with seeded filters in 4 days after my 90g tank sprung a leak.
Cycled my sisters brand new 10g in only 5 days with no used filters or anything.
I still dont believe it will work over night though.
Loaches, Could you test your levels every day for the next week and post them for us??, I would like to see how well Biospira works.

yes sneaky pete i will do this. and it is quite normal to over stck mbuna tanks so the agression spreads.the less fish u have the more damage done. i will be using extra filtaration. and ive heard that electric yellows are very hardy i wil also be using a seeded filter cartige from a cycled 10 gallon

go with the biospira. i hear it works really good. follow the instructions on the bottle or the website.
as for having 20 yellow labs in a 55....i dont know. it is too many imho.
i would put 5 in there it start it out. let these fish spawn a few times and grow some up. in less than a year you will have a fully stocked tank.

I also think 20 electric yellows in a 55g is too much. Because once they're all full grown there isn't gonna be much room in there.

anyways, good luck with the tank.
