55 gallon aquarium is not large enough for a breeding pair of managuense.

I have a breeding pair they will do just fine in a 55 mine are in a 33, as for what to put in the tank it is up to you but keep in mind if they want to move it they will, they will pile the gravel up and keep one side of the tank glass bottom when they are ready to lay. All I have in my tank is gravel and some heavy rocks which they lay on, they are very good parents and keep the fry until it is time for the next batch to be layed, if you don't get the fry out in time they will be eaten.

good luck

joe

Don't jags get 14", both sexes being separated by a divider prior to spawning?

Don't try to breed jags in a 55g. It will be a complete disaster. Big males can easily top 18" with females hitting 15" easy. A 125g would be the absolute minimum for them and then its close. They love their space and will do anything to protect it. A 180 would be what you need if your truly serious about it.

they the smaller tank for breeding a 55 is plenty of space for a breeding pair, I would say the large tank would be a must if you had a couple of males or females

" 6 foot tanks are the minimum for attempting pairs of this species - and even with compatible, well established pairs, aggression is never far off. Keep a tank divider handy to protect the female from an overly aggressive male. "

Taken from cichlid forum; a site harboring some of the better cichlid hobbyists in the nation. Realistically, a 16" male and a 12" female won't even FIT in a 55 gallon aquarium, much less a 33. The specimens won't even be able to turn around.

55 gallon would be ok while the jags are smaller...like 6" or so. once jags hit about 6-8" their territorial nature really comes out and that's when they absolutely need their space. in the long run, a 120 gallon (4' x 2' x 2') would probably be ok for them, but as greenmonkey said a 180 would be perfect for a breeding pair. no way could they be kept permanently in a 55 gallon.

I know that it sounds way wrong but my breeding pair that are three years old live in a 33 gallon tank the male is about twelve inches and the female is nine, they lay about every six weeks and raise the fry until they lay again, as for the fry my other tanks of various fish enjoy the veal

That's probably why they're only 12 inches and nine, respectively. Isn't a 33 gallon aquarium 12.5" wide? I'm surprised the fish even reached 12 inches in that tank.

I couldn't agree more with what Cup said. 3 yr. old jags should be a bit larger than the pair you have. I had a jag for about a year which I believe to have been female, and when I got rid of her she was about 9" SL.

well it is a good thing that Danny has a 55 and not a 33 like me, my fish are continuing to grow, as jagaurs get older they put on mass as well as length, which slows the length growth down. (a 33 is not my only tank, I have big tanks as well, 33 is just my breeding tank it will not be there home for life)

But to stay on topic a 55 will be a fine breeding tank for a pair of Jagaurs
