Well, you could in theory, but all cichlids do get territorial when breeding. Also, kribs are supposedly peaceful, but other people have had some bad experiences. Bolivian rams, some apistos, and angelfish are good peaceful cichlids.

You probably could do a tank with apistos angels festivum and severums if the tank is large enough. Kribs get nasty when they are breeding and are semi territorial. Uarus (they arent that attractive though) are a very good cichlid for medium sized tetras and smaller peaceful cichlids. They are the gentle giants of cichlids

About the discus...I really dont know if its actually the best option in a community. I think they should be in a tank for themselves as the main focus.

Having more than discus can introduce diseases and bad water quality. Having semi large - same size tank mates can also stress them out.

Just my 2 cents.

I'de say you could do a female krib and 2 male rams no problem, so long as you add both rams at the same time and size. Heck those are my nicest fish in my 33 right now. I'm also going to be adding an angel at some point (a small one, i know, i know, the tetras, they'll be fine). Rams do tend to bully each other, it takes time for that to decrease. I'de also say look into other apisto's, they're all-around nice looking fish. Don't pair any males and females together of the same species though, if breeding starts, it won't be pretty.

A RTBS shouldn't be in a 20 gallon in the first place. Whether or not he will be bothered by the aggression of the cichlids depends on which cichlids you get. On a whole, RTBSs can hold their own against most fish, so I wouldn't worry about aggression, rather about overstocking.

always have had a rtbs in a 20, never had any problems and they have always gotten at least 4 inches long... so i think the whole not in a 20 is a personal opinion not a fact

Not a ton of point having cichlids if you don't breed, IMO - they're no prettier in most cases than tetras, and without watching them raise and protect young, what's the point, really, of having the intelligent fish that cause trouble rather than the peaceful, stupid fish?

I believe it is fact that RTBS require a tank of at least 3' for ample swimming space for such an active fish. With the cichlids, a larger tank is definetly better.

RTBS can get over 7 inches long, so there is something wrong with them getting to only 4 inches. They are a territorial, active fish that needs more swimming room than a 20 can provide.

and as for breeding, no i dont see the point. there are no stores down here that will buy or trade the fry... so why have a bunch of babies when i only have 2 tanks and thats all will ever have. oh what breed them so they can all get sick from over population in the tank? umm no thats just cruel. just because you can do something, doesnt mean you should

Calm down, I wasn't jumping on you! How was I to know your stores wouldn't take fry? Besides, most will be happy to take half-grown fish for free since they can turn around and sell them, as long as they're not something the store is already running over with, like livebearers. My point was just that if you don't breed, you miss out on nearly all the really fun, fascinating, intelligent behaviors of cichlids. Obviously you don't have to breed them! I'm just giving you one opinion on why you don't want to cross it right off your list.
