hi everyone, iv just got hold of three oscars but got rid of one. the two oscars left are a tiger and a red, both are jouvies. i put two cons in there with them and would like some more cons, i would luv all feed back on every topic involving breeding, feeding, e.t.c. i had two tigers but removed one as they didnt like each others space. now the red and tiger seem to get along swim together side by side each other. the tiger seems to be the domin in the tank and picks at the red now and then. could they be a breeding pair, any info would be a lot of help thanks all.

Welcome to FP & how big is your tank?. As Oscars need a big tank.

Here is a link about Oscars:- http://www.oscarfish.com/

Tank Capacity:
Litres: 168.91
US Gallons: 44.63
UK Gallons: 37.16
I think that you can only keep 1 Oscar in that tank.

I think that a 55 or 75 US gal. tank is a minimum for 1 Oscar.

you're going to probably wind up wanting to look for something like a 125 gallon tank. if you only keep the 2 oscars and they wind up as a breeding pair then you may be able to get by with a 75 or 90 gallon.

Well it's good that you're asking for help. Get a 5-6 foot tank and then maybe you can keep 2 oscars.

Don't look for tank length - width and capacity are very important for happy O's. It's no good having a 6' long tank if it's only 1' wide. Your Oscars will be bigger than 12" (1') in twelve months or so... making it very hard for them to turn in the tank.

You'll also need good filtration. Either 2 canisters, or a large canister (rated for a tank bigger than yours) + a powerhead (large...) or a sump system.

Well i think your ok for a little bit, but if you get more cons, and two pair off, then they could kill your oscars, i know cons are much smaller, but i had a male convict kill my jaguar this week, so dont put it past them esp. in a smaller tank.

i suggest doing a search on the net, going to the library or buying a book from your lfs. learn the basics and then ask us the specifics. i suggest buying a book because you can learn alot from it and can always go back and use it as a reference.

convicts breed like crazy and are very protective parents. they will beat on the oscars if they go near their territory (and in a 3foot there wont be much space left for the O's). as the fry grow the oscars will probably try to eat them.

have you had a look around some cichlid sites? there is alot of info on oscars and convicts out there.

if the fry hatch they can be left with the parents (same temp and water parameters), depending on the aggression they end up showing to the oscars. convicts are quite hardy and the fry will do fine on crushed up flakes/pellets.
