they can get big. I've seen them about 14 inches.
If you want them to breed thn get make your tank barren. Break a ceramic floer pot or get some pieces of flat rocks and make some steps out of them. Turn the heat up to about 82 and see what happens. Make sure they get some lie food or some meat from another source. Good luck.

Jack dempseys will grow very fast(not quite as fast as an oscar) until they get up to about 4-5 inches and then their growth slacks off. They can get to around 14 inches with 8-10 being more the norm for a home aquarium. As for breeding you would be best to buy 6 young fish and let them pair off naturally. After you have your pair return the other 4 to the fish store. As for getting them to breed offer a varied diet, plenty of water changes and raise the temp to about 80-82 degrees farenheit. Also as the person before me suggested get them a rock or some other object to place their eggs upon.

i bought 2 jacks and a month later i had about 800 fry so be ready. once the female starts breeding expect her to slow her growth. once the fry have strips, seperate the fry from the parents then one month later expect to do the process over.

good luck

i was raising 2 jacks, 1 oscar, and a green terror in a 55usg and one day i came down stairs and looked into the tank to see what looked like a blob of jelly which was really about 400 little jacks!

soon after i realized that the female would hover above the fry while the male jack scared of the intruders.

to avoid stress i moved the oscar and gt out. but a couple of days later before i could seperate the fry from the parents they ate them all.

so once the fry get stripes its best to remove them from the tank
