Usually the female is rounder in the body than the male, not necessarily any larger. She will be more colorful, almost brilliant at times. It may take several tries before they get it right, so don't be discouraged. They tend to eat the eggs the first couple of times out. Cool water changes make it seem like new rain and that will keep them at it. I still kept changing the water everyweek.

The female is actually brighter, with fewer blue jewels. The male is a darker, almost lavender, red. They are exceptional parents. My jewels are currently raising their second brood. They can stay in with their fry for a rather long time after the fry become free swimming. Feed baby brine and microworms as first foods once they start swimming.
