I have a 46 gallon tank with the following fish in at the moment. 2- Pearl gourami, 9- Black Phantom tetras, and 7- Albino cories. I have dark gravel and am going for a black and white theme. I have heard that the keyhole cichlid is not aggressive. Is this true. and if so how would they do with the fish I currently have. Any information would be great.

Keyholes will make a nice addition to your tank. They are very peaceful, and sometimes shy, so give them hiding places to retreat to, like plants, driftwood, a cave or overturned flowerpot. They're not quite black and white, IME more of a ecru(cream) and brown, but can change colors quickly, and are one of the hardiest of the smaller cichlids. May the Keyholes 'unlock' the beauty of your tank!

Hey thanks for the reply joe fishy. I have talked to a few of my lfs and I think they can order some up. How many should be kept together. I was thinking of a pair but could go with 3 or 4. I think they would look great with the tank.

I have three Keyholes. They are very peaceful and spend their day picking around on the plants and the bottom. I think they would go good with your other fish too.

I agree with all the above. Hardy, shy, great fish. 4 would be fine together with what you have.

My local fish stores don't have any Keyholes in now. Man all this research and they sold the last pair last week. Hopefully they will get more in soon. If I can't get any Keyholes does any one have any other recommendations Cichlids or not that go with the list from earlier.

Bolivian rams would do well in your tank. They're a little smaller than keyholes, not nearly as shy, but still pretty non-aggressive.

Laetacara (formerly Aequidens) curviceps, commonly known as "Curviceps" (how original!) might be another choice for you. It's grayish in color with black stripes, so would fit with your color scheme, although it may get some blue or yellow highlights if spawning. I like the Bolivians also, but they do have a little more color, with some red developing in the fins. HTH

Festivum - X 2 or more will do fine. Do better in a small shoal of 2-3 though, as they are quite timid. Like the Blue Ram it is sentitive to water charges, meds, temps. But if you got you tank running well, then this should not be a problem. Bolivian Rams are alot more robust than the Blue rams.

i would suggest shopping around for ur keyholes, i had a pair of keyholes once, in an african tank with aggressive fish, they kept to themselves and heck they even breed in the tank, so i got them a tank all to themselves, there where 3 breeding pairs now, so i got them a new tank for the fry, i ended up with like 20 young good sized and like 5-6 pairs spread over 2 tanks, only 20 u say i sold the others but, then then my dog pulled to cord ooutta the canaster filter and water sread everywhere and the to tank fried so sad, they are good fish rams just ain't the same as keyholes

I'd also recommend either ordering them from your LFS or shopping around. As an alternative though, the flag cichlid is also very peaceful.
