First off, what type of cichlids are we talking about?
Second off, you can't really...errr..."feed" fish plants. It's not proper nutrition and chances are they probably won't go for it either. It's best for you to have a friend or someone else reliable come and feed them for you...I don't really trust those feeder blocks. Someone else may have better input on those though...

if 5 days, just leave them alone, do a water change before you leave..that's all you need to do

Never known cichlids to eat plants. Just feed them before you leave and they should be fine.

If they are SA cichlids they may appreciate a plant or two to munch on.

If I put plants in mine devour the plant in 24 hours, mmmm salad bar, gotta love it.

All the best for whatever you decide, am sure they will be fine.

i have one yellow lab and two kennyi cichlids that are both under an inch a piece. I just wana make sure they do fine while i am gone, having someone come over is not an option. they lock the dorm building so no one can get in.

Make sure they don't turn off the power - a lot of schools do.

I agree, if there's no problem with power, they'll be fine. I've left my mbuna for more than a week before and they've been fine. Maybe you could try to grow a bit of algae in the tank beforehand, so they can munch on that?
