The pH of a Malawi tank should be around 8.2.

Malawi cichlids prefer a high pH, and hard water. That's how the water is in their natural habitat. Personally, pH isn't a problem in most tanks, even if it is very high or low. The pH in my South American tank is over 8.0, and none of my fish have had any problems with it. As long as the pH is constant, there shouldn't be any trouble at all.

i agree with sirbrooks, most malawi's are very hardy and should adjust to most water, though optimum conditions would be a higher ph and harder water. to help keep the hardness and ph up try adding limstone (holey rock) to the tank or put crushed coral in the filter. this will help raise your hardness and ph and it slowly release calcium into the tank to keep it stable.

A substrate is much more appreciated by most fish of lake malawi than regular aquarium gravel that is colored apoxy. It will also help harden the water. You can use some rocks such as tufa within your tank as well. These rocks are cheap at landscaping places. Just as suggested above keeping at constant ph is far better than trying constantly adjust it. Much less stressful on fish. A ph of 8.0 is acceptable range for malawi fish.

I know some people that had Malawi's are their's did better on ther low end of Malawi's conditions (pH 7.7, dH 6). The real lake has very soft water, in the range of say, what Apistogrammas would like. Around 50 to 60ppm carbonate hardness.
