There are 3 groups of cichlids: Mbuna, Haps and Peacocks. Mbuna should be kept seperately from Haps and Peacocks since they have different diets (Mbuna are herbivores, too much protein and they will get Malawi Bloat). Look around and decide which group you like best and then go from there. |

They are amazing fish with lots of character but problems with them can easily arise easily and very quickly from poor guidance and lack of basic knowledge. |

A tank that size can support either choice, so it's just a matter of seeing what you like best. Check out some pics at http://www.cichlid-forum.com/photogallery, you can select Malawi Haps, Peacocks or Mbuna from the dropdown menu. Whichever group appeals to you more, go with them. Peacocks and haps are generally larger and more peaceful, and need open swimming spaces and a bit more room to themselves. Mbuna are smaller, aggressive and need piles of rock caves, and can be overcrowded with good filtration. The only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it. - Oscar Wilde |
