I've found that the dorsal fin is the best way to tell the sexes apart in this species of fish. Male German rams have elongated second and third (from the front) rays in their dorsal fin, while females don't. Sometimes it can be hard to tell if a ram has rays that are longer than normal, because apparently this ray "spike" is being bred out of them at the farms where most German rams originate. As a result, male rams can be seen with relatively short second and third dorsal rays (the second ray is the longest one).

Female

The fish in the second picture is a gold ram, but the same method of sexing applies.

I have a male german blue, and 3 females.. The 2 larger females also have the extended ray, so that is not a given to sex rams...

Inspect the black spot on their sides, females will have specks of blue in it, as where males will not.

hope this helps, its a pic of my pair, with the male in the front (on the right). He has a much higher spike then her in his dorsal fin, she has a much rounder pink belly, and more red on her fins. He has no pink on him at all, and his belly isn't rounded, but note also that my female was a little gravid when this picture was taken.
