i cant think of any solid black mbuna with yellow fins. any more of a description would be nice. are these the ones they have at petsmart/petco? if so they are bumblebee cichlids and the males tend to stay darker and the females will be more yellow with brownish stipes/spots. you can give them a try, but they are a pretty brutal fish and they are not very tolerant of other tankmates. they also get quite a bit larger than other mbuna and will most likely be very tough to handle. i wouldnt recommend buying any cichlids at the big box stores. they mainly carry fish not for the beginners or for smaller tanks. are there any other fishstores near you?

your peacock should start to turn more bluish with yellow fins. turning black isnt a good sign i imagine. most likely due to stress.

your peacock is probably a benga or "sunshine" as the big box stores like to call them. i had one once and he really looked pretty good. took a while to color up, but was nice.

my suggestion to you is to get 6 more electric yellows. sex isnt a huge issue, although i would attempt to get more females. this is a very good beginner cichlid to learn on. they are mild mannered (for the most part) and beautiful. they can get along with many other fish. i would take the M. crabro back to the lfs. they are too large and mean for a small 55g tank. you could also get a couple more female peacocks and a male to give you two nice species for that tank.
it is best to stick to only a couple species and not have a big mish-mash of species. aggression control is the most common problem with affrican tanks. if you bought your peacock from pet smart, they usually only sell male peacocks, so you might be out of luck getting more females from them. i wouldnt trust another lfs to match the peacocks you found at petsmart. if you cant find any female peacocks, dont worry, the male should be alright on his own and he might color up nice either way.
african cichlids are aggressive and will usually kill "noraml" community fish, so be carefull and do research before you get anymore fish for this tank. find out what are compatible for tank size, diet and aggression. the peacocks have very low aggression (in general) compared to mbuna (yellow labs, kenyi, crabro, etc) and usually dont fare well when kept with them. the e. yellows are an exception to this rule. the yellows will breed quite abit for you and you should have a tank busting out with fry in a matter of 6 months.(that is, if they have a lot of hiding spots). good luck and feel free to ask more questions.

I'd think you could... I have a little more than that in my 55. Hey, you got into the same situation as me! At my LFS, the obliquedens I wanted to get were too expensive, so the lady said "Why not one of these?" and she pointed me to a drab looking cichlid. She said they'd grow up to be beauties-- and wow! Mine's the star of my tank now. Violet and blue irisdescence covers its body no more brown stripes. My book says they get 14 inches though... I sure hope they dont, or we're both in trouble!

The brown looks like a female Aulonocara steveni. The yellow and brown one is a Metriaclima crabro.

The unkown looks like a peacock cichlid of some type. The picture is not really clear. What size of tank do you have that community in?

i don't know the scientific name but they are commonly refered to as "bumble bee cichlids"

i hope you have the right set up and compatibility assuming you made an impulse buy. they can get quite agressive and grow to about 5 or 6 inches.
