Hiya, my b/f got me two new fish that are definatly cichlids but I cant find what they are....

They are black with vertical yellow stripes which cover the whole fish (7 stipes on each) currently about 2.5 inches long. not shy at all but sometimes have spurts of speed when swimming around.

my b/f was told the name but can't remember - he thnks they might have MAW or MOW or MUW at the begining.

Thank you in advance if you can help.

Anita.

I think your friend was trying to say it's a Malawian cichlid of some sort, but there's a bunch of them and I'm not an expert.

it is more oval than anything...not yet agressive but very active.

I've looked at the profile for the convict...similar shape but the stripes on mine are very straight, like they were drawn on with a ruler & are also yellow.

check out psuedotropheus polit
or metriaclima crabro (bumblebee)
any of these?
check out www.malawimayhem.com look in the species profiles under metriaclima, psuedotropheus, maylandia. it may take a while, but you should find it there.

is this your fish? If so you have a Tilapia buttikoferi...aka Zebra tilapia. These are a highly aggressive fish that can reach 16" if not more. Great fish but they get huge and extremely mean.

btw, here's a pic of a much larger buttikoferi.
