There are lots of good Tang choices for a 29; mine is a paludarium with Altolamprologus compressiceps "Sumbu", for instance.

While you could squeeze two species in, I think you'll have a better time of it - and more importantly, the fish will - by sticking with one.

Some common choices which would do well:
A Julidochromis species, particularly J. transcriptus or J. ornatus; Julies are ideal for those who like flashy patterns.
Neolamprologus leleupi, a fairly aggressive, BRIGHT yellow/orange rockdweller.
Neolamprologus brichardi or a related species - the others will colonise to some extent but this fish is famous for its family life.
The shelldweller of your choice, with possibilities ranging from gorgeous (Lamprologus stappersi for pattern, L. ocellatus "gold" for color) or strong and moody (Lepidiolamprologines) to fascinating and familial (N. multifasciatus, N. similis) or just plain odd (A. compressiceps "Sumbu", Telmatochromis species).

There are others but those are among the most popular and great choices for the budding Tang keeper.

Ooh, which book? There are some great ones out there - and some, not so much, although most are at least mildly useful.

Ah, I have that one. It's pretty good; basic, but accurate.
