Basically, you need:
Tank (and usual associated equipment - hood, filter, heater, light, etc)
Sand
Appropriate shells
Hard, clean, alkaline water.

Not much else is required. For a 10 gal, I'd recommend Neolamprologus brevis, though multis and similis can be OK. For a 20 long, basically every shell-dwelling species will work except Pseudotropheus lanisticola.

Thoughts on tank size? Preferred species? Have you been to Shelldwellers.com?

It's up to you, but I prefer fine sand - it's easy for the fish to move and to sift through their gills. Fine marine sand, commonly sold in 5-lb. bags (in a variety of colors; I use white but I have a friend who mixed green and blue and I'm thought about the rust shade, for fun), is my general preference.
Or for a really gorgeous look, spend slightly more and get Tahitian Moon sand.
Or, for dirt cheap and just as effective, play sand or pool filter sand.
