i've heard conflicting things about the compatibility of cichlasoma nicaraguense for semi-aggresive communities.
would a single, obviously unbreeding, nicaraguense be able to go in with less aggressive cichlids like uaru, aequidens metae and gymnogeophagus?
If not, what other 8-10 inch cichlids would work as a single centrepiece with such tankmates?
and without a mate, woud a nicaraguense be colourful enough for a centrepice.

Our lone male nicaraguense behaved really well in a comunity cichlid tank with large and small fish, he was in love with a female braziliensis and they even went so far as eggs in a pot but they weren't fertilised
They are a beautiful cichlid and if they're happy will show some great colours that make a perfect centrepiece fish .
Our nic...

nice fish RB.
those are two quite strange fish to try hybridising. Maybe they'll breed successfully one day.

That certainly would be an interesting combination. I'm not one for intentionally creating hybrids but I would be interested to see what an adult from a spawn of those 2 would look like. I had a hybrid spawn recently between this pair:

on the left is the male V. zonatus and on the right is a female C. heterospilus. well, I'm really guessing on the genders based on their behavior once the eggs were laid. the eggs hatched but the parents then forgot about them and the fry were eaten. I would've grown up a few fry to see how they looked. [/font]

Beautiful fish Jason! I would have love to see what happened with your pair too.
I totally agree on hybrids as well and wondered what to do if they were ever successful
Thanks poissonrouge, so did you make up your mind on what to choose ?

I'm enjoying the pics and discussion on hybrids

Miss Blue Acara here decided to give her GT boyfriend another chance two days ago. First try I don't think he went near the eggs, but this time I got to watch the entire process. They are both very, very protective of the eggs.

Sorry this got off topic

there are certain hybrids that always seem to succeed when they happen in aquarums. convicts are a species i've heard of a lot of hybrids involving. midas cichlids too.
R/B i wasn't asking entirely expecting to get the fish, i ws just wondering. Nicaraguense look great and they were selling them in my LFS, but my tank's too small and already full. but one day i was thiking it would be good to have a bg, 180+g tanks for mid-aggression cichlids, and hoping i couild squeeze in a spilotum. thanks for help anyway.

My belief is that it totally depends on the fish itself. I have a male Nic in with my Uaru and severums and he is fine. Admitidly the Uaru are a breeding pair and definately hold their own especially when breeding. The only thing i have found that you may encounter is the water parameters are very different for Uaru and Nics (Uaru soft acidic, Nics Harder Alkaline) but I have found them to both handle a pH of 7 no problems. In respect to the brasiliensis and the nic pairing off they are 'aparently' quite closely related and I have heard of them having successful spawns (only rumoured though). But getting back to the original question, i believe that my nic is a sook and the Uaru quite aggressive for their breeds. My suggestion would be to get the Uaru a little bigger than the nics and grow them up together but be prepared to either move on to another tank or return them (if possible) if problems occur.
