evens, because if you get pairs, the odd ram out would get picked on and confined to one area of the aquarium. IME

It all depends on the sex ratio and the number of odds or evens. For 3 fish, a trio would be fine, however, a reverse trio would not. If you get 5 or more, then I would not say there would be any difference between odd or even numbers.
