I've heard that the only way to tell an oscars sex is to wait until the fish are ready to spawn watch them and when their tubes emerge it is then possible to distinguish the sex of the fish. The only other way is to disect the fish and look at it's internal genetials. Some people claim you can do it by simply looking at the fish but size has nothing to do with it as male and female both grow to the same size and neither does the color of the fish as both male and female may have the same color traits.

like cichlid said, the only 100% way to accuratally sex cichlids is to vent them

just to clarify, there are many cichlids whose gender can be determined 100% without venting. oscars, however are not one of these. I've seen theories pop up here and there that the fins are slightly different lengths or shapes on males and females. I really don't buy into these theories though. IMO, the only way to tell with an oscar is to vent or watch them spawn.

Ditto from me too, and our female is far more aggressive than the male.
The only way we found out what sex they were for sure was when the spawned.
