In the children's department of my church there is a beautiful tank...at least a 55. It has three parrot cychlids in it. When my granddaughter comes up to the tank the other fish in the tank ignore her, but the parrots come to the front of the tank. Are they trying to scare her away from their territory, or are they curious?

In this case, probably they're hungry. Territorial would be pretty obvious, most likely - flared fins, parading back and forth looking big and scary, etc. Coming up and sort of wagging, especially with their snouts pointed at the surface, is usually begging for food.

They are probably just curious. Cichlids are smart fish, and seem to possess a few human emotions. Also, they seem to know exactly where their food comes from, and that people = food. The parrot cichlids are just interested in your granddaughter, and hoping she feeds them!

Thanks, just curious. The other fish totally ignore the children, but the parrots don't. Granddaughter certainly enjoys the tank and we have to spend time watching and talking about the fish.
