Biotodoma cupido possibly?!? I haven't kept them but I've heard a lot of good things about them.

There are several Gymnogeophagus you could choose from that would probably work. Depending on the tankmates and dimensions of the tank you might be able to get a severum. Again, depending on tankmates you might be able to do a male of one of the different Thorichthys (firemouths and related) species. These are Central American but very colorful.

How about an angelfish]http://www.fishprofiles.com/profiles/fw/profile.asp?id=Pterophyllum+scalare[/link] or [link=altum angelfish?

They aren't colourful, but they are SA and very impressive looking fish.

There are actually quite a few different, interesting color variations of angels available. Angels Plus has good descriptions and photos.

Depends what else you have in there obviously but a peaceful cichlids would be the festive and keyhole cichlids - 20 & 15 cm respectively in the wild but usually considerably smaller than this in aqauria.

How about dwarf cichlid, such as a panda, cuckoo, redstripe or yellow dwarf cichlid. They all look very colourful, are S. American and are quite peacefull.
I'm at the moment developing a Malami tank but was thinking of a dwarf tank before. good luck.

A chocolate cichlid would be great they are jolly brown giants well not actually giants but around 30cm and they have this nack of changing colours to suite their mood.

How about Severums ?

They grow 8 inches, but would be perfect for a 60 gallon And they are peaceful
