the common name of Pearl cichlid usually refers to [link=Geophagus brasiliensis]http://www.gcca.net/fom/Geophagus_brasiliensis.htm" style="COLOR: #000000[/link]. I wouldn't compare the brasiliensis to a flowerhorn at all. if you're looking for something smaller and less aggressive than a flowerhorn then I can only think of 2 at the moment that might work for you. the common Salvini or the less common Amphilophus lyonsi.

G. brasiliensis is supposed to be one of the more aggressive Geophagus but no where near as aggressive as a flowerhorn. they are a very slow growing species, but can eventually get 10-12". because of their potential size they would need around a 75 gallon to be really comfortable.
