Most africans perfer a balanced meal, just like humans .

This is because too much protein will cause the fish to have bloat, and usually the poop will be very big. Too little, and the fish wont grow

Try feeding a staple pellet for 2 days, then a vegetable based flake (usually spirulini is used) for one day, and repeat for well, forever . Usually a treat here and there wont hurt (brine shrimp, frozen or live).

Mine get a cichlid flake as there base food. This is supplemented by spirulina floating stick, sirulina sinking wafer( mostly for other fish and snail, but they love them as well), frozen shrimp(they go crazy for them, but I wouldn't feed them this often), sinking shrimp pellets(sometimes) and they also eat freeze dried bloodworms and sometimes, very rarely veges. The spirulina food is supposed to bring out there colors more. I bascially offer a varied diet, I wouldn't want to eat the same thing day in and day out. In the wild they will dig through the sand and rocks looking for microinverts.

peacocks are omnivores and will eat pretty much anything. find a good staple pellet and throw in a weekly treat of mysis shrimp. when they get larger, flake often gets too messy, so i avoid flake for the most part. occasional spirulina wont hurt them either. i have found that most of the ones i used to have are not too picky. seems the mysis shrimp are their favorite treat. they even eat snails that i put in my tank. i think the key is quality and variety.

peacocks feed on shrimp that live in the sand so i would give them assorted foods inc. shrimp pellets, cichlid granules, spirulina flakes, fd brine shrimp, etc.

Peacocks do like more protein than mbuna, which is why they should never be kept together. But as others said, balance is best, and some veggies in their diet won't go astray.

I would hold off of the mysis, or be careful.

Pick brands that have went through sterilization process, as an expert (Pam Chin) told me that there are cases of a "super ich" which kills fish in 24 hours which lead back to mysis shrimp.

if you want coloration to come out best, use New life spectrum flakes and pellets. It has everything they need, and if you can get a good source of ghost shrimp as most of these guys like to eat crustaceans that are along the sand bottems in their native lands.
