a mature male convict will have a noticable lump on its forehead and is generally larger than the female. Also, the female should have an orangish belly. Convicts can actually be pretty aggressive with any type of fish, especially when breeding so be careful.

The convicts will be territorial with fishes much larger than it. They don't care about there opponents size...

will keep this in mind. also these fishes are only around 2 inches long, so must be babies. is there another way to tell. like dorsal size.

The males dorsal and anal fins are longer (they sometimes surpass the length of the tail fin).

there are several different types of "blue convicts." 1 type is the Honduran red point. this is a separate species from C. nigrofasciatus. there is also a "blue convict" which is a hybrid of a honduran red point and a regular convict. another type of blue convict is a naturally occurring blue color morph of C. nigrofasciatus but I believe this is by far the most rare of the 3. real convicts just aren't collected anymore unless by a private collector. even then, the likelihood of the true blue ones being caught would be pretty slim imo. chances are, if you're at an lfs and see "blue convicts" they're probably the hybrid.

I have black and pink convicts that breed together fine. If you breed two black convicts, you will most likely end up with some pink. Also, females will have orange on their sides even at two inches. The orange will go away briefly after the eggs are laid.
