is there any reason besides stress that my rams would be showing vertical stripes?

You mean the black ones, like the one near the eye? German rams (I'm pretty sure that those are the ones you own) are supposed to have stripes, that is part of their natural coloration. My new ram (shown below) has stripes.

If yours didn't have the stripes when you bought them, then they were probably stressed-out at the store. Their stripes are just now returning. My ram has colored up a lot since I bought him, and since I took that picture. He's quite a sight now!

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."

nah I dont mean the stripe across the eye, i mean the stripes that show up all the way across their bodies when they are stressed out. I think a lot of cichlids get this, similar to the way some (usually) fish (like bettas and discus) sometimes show stripes.

Yeah I know what you mean, I noticed that when I do water changes my Ram sometimes gets dark verticle bars on it's body, just like a discus does. It's most likely due to stress.
