I need help sexing my oscars, I currently have 2 in a 2 foot tank, (will be upgrading to a 4 foot tank in 3 weeks time), I am needing to know the best possible way to sex this breed of fish. Also, I have a tiger albino, and a red oscar, if they happened to be a pair, will they breed? (I am a little concerned that they will not breed because they are slightly diffrent.)

there is no way to sex oscars by physical features. aside from watching the fish spawn to see which one lays the eggs and which one fertilizes them, the only way to sex them is by venting them.

if by chance they pair up, they will breed even though one is albino and the other is not. they are still the same species and would produce viable fry. however, the chances of them pairing up is fairly slim, imo. in order to get a pair it is best to get at least 6 juvies and allow them to pair off naturally.

There is a theory of proving the fish male or female, usually the male has a more ounced head, but this would be hard to compare if they are different sizes. Dorsal fins and anal fins are closer to the tail fin.

there are several theories. In my first post, I should have said there are no proven methods of sexing them by physical features.

with the dorsal and anal fins closer to the tail fin, what sex would this be?

And would a 4 foot tank be sufficent enough to breed them in?

how wide is your 4' tank? It would be best for the tank to be at least 16" wide as oscars get pretty big (~14" or so).

I currently dont have a 4 foot tank, but will be purchasing one in about 2 or 3 weeks time.
The oscars are currently in a 2 foot tank, but you must remember that these oscars arnt even 5 inches long yet.

They can be almost impossible to tell apart.
Saw some really nice tiger albino juvies in the LFS yesterday for $10. each.. If I didn't already have a 1 foot oscar in my tank I'd get a batch and try to get a breeding pair, darnit !
