I have an empty 6g and I'm still debating what to do with it I've been researching killies but now I'm wondering about shellies. Are there any species that would do well in a 6g? The tank has a flourite substrate, I assume I'd have to switch to sand. How else would the tank have to be aquascaped?

Thanks

Oooh!

The number one best species for a tank that size is Neolamprologus brevis. Although multis also work, brevis is a much better choice because A) they live in pairs, not groups, B) they keep extremely small territories, and C) they're not as absurdly prolific.

Yes, you'd want to switch to sand, about an inch or two of fairly fine sand. Other than that, all you need is a few shells - brevis, coming as they do from areas very low on shells, have adapted to cohabit and to kick the fry out at young ages. You can start with a couple shells per juvenile but once they pair off, feel free to pare that number down. The two only need one shell, but I'd suggest a few extras.

Beyond that, aquascaping is up to you. I've found that "grassy" plants work well in sand - vals, sag, dwarf hairgrass, etc. Anubias, java fern, and mosses are other obvious choices. Just try not to take up too much floor space; planting around the edges is a good way to do it. They'll dig heavily around the shell and will be happy to uproot plants there, but on the whole plants on the outskirts of the territory will be left alone.
