Rams are peaceful Cichlids and are usually taken as 1 male is to 1 female, i.e. a pair. I would suggest that you take 3 males and 4 females though.

It's hard to tell male from female when young, and best to get a small group, and let them figure it out. Once paired, you can move the extras if you wish to breed the pair.

I'm not totally sure about this, but I think that once a male and female pair off, the male will be aggressive to any other lone females. If so, a male with 3-4 females might not be a good idea.

I agree with Joe Fishy. By 6-7 of them and let them figure things out. It's also very difficult to sex young Rams as there's no sure fire method.

Most LFS sell young/juvenile fish anyway so it's unlikely that you'll be purchasing full grown fish. I prefer them to be small so I can get the full enjoyment of raising and breeding them. Plus, if you buy a fish fully grown you will have less time to enjoy them. Microgeophagus ramirezi usually live 2-4 years but that can vary.

Smaller fish can be a bit trickier to acclimatize in that huge swings in water conditions could cause easier deaths.

smaller fish are usually cheaper anyway, I like raising fish from young rather than buying adults.

ok when i bought my rams one was HUGE and the other was an itty baby, and he has adjusted much better, he isnt afraid of the angels or anyhting, the larger one however jsut hangs around in the plants and hides.... so i'd suggest the smaller the better

Hey guys, doesn't it somewhat depend on how big his tank is?
