[link=This link]http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/forums/Cichlid%20Central/49933.html" style="COLOR: #FF3333[/link] is the original thread and pictures of my mystery cichlid.

It's doing quite well, approximately 2" now, definitely stays in the bottom portion of the tank, eats anything, doesn't bother plants, and I've seen no agression from it whatsoever towards the other fish. Finally not afraid of the camera either

I still have no idea what it is. I thought I'd post this info and some pictures taken today to see if anyone can figure this out

Theresa, you never did say where you got this fish. It is looking more and more like the Herichthys sp. 'Rio Salto' that I have. I posted a pic in the original thread.

This isn't a dempsey. Jack dempseys will either show vertical bars or one mid-lateral circle in the middle of the body. this fish has shown between 2 and 4 circles along the mid-lateral line which is more a characteristic of a Herichthys species.

Sorry about that...one of the lfs had a tank of them labelled 'Medium American Cichlid'. It's a reputable store and I only asked about potential size and temperament (was told ~4-5" and non-agressive)

Theresa, does this lfs commonly get some of the more rare central/south american cichlid species? have they ever received fish from Jeff Rapp's? I know he ships to many lfs all over the country and in fact he has a list on his website of lfs' that frequently order from him. I'm really leaning towards the Rio Salto. Mine, when seen in very high lighting (such as from flash) show a light orangish body coloration and they're starting to develop a blue/green spangling though nothing close to the spangling of a texas or carpintis.

Jason-this lfs usually carries the more common cichlids, but I checked out the site and Jeff Rapp does ship to them. It would be nice if they had them labelled properly, although this is the first time I'd not seen a species name on a tank there. I'm thinking about emailing him a couple pics to see what he thinks.

If Jeff ships to them then I'd be willing to bet they're Herichthys sp. 'Rio Salto'. They will grow to approx. 6-7" and I can't speak on temperament yet. Rusty Wessel (who supplied these fish to Jeff) told me they were not overly aggressive I believe.
