ok all, i have been thinking of the idea of making my new 150g a cichlid tank, problem is i dont know what works best with what. i'd like to go with maybe 4-5 (or more) of 3-4 different species of cichlids. and some with nice colors.

suggestions?

and any body know of any kind of loach that will work with them so i have a bottom dweller?

also, what would be the best plants to use with them?

You can have some Malawi or some Tanganiycan Cichlids, but don't mix them together. They need some Rockwork, but only a few Plants. I heared that BN are good with Cichlids, but they also need some hiding places.

150G sounds like a lot of fun! That is plenty of room for so many different kinds of cichlid! Truely an exciting venture! What is your preference? African or New World Cichlids? Either way you can create quite a tank! Oh yes, I have kept a Clown loach with my african cichlids for over 3 years now, they are very very cute & often come to the top at feeding time and eat flakes, frozen, & live foods just like everyone else!
Im excited for you!

experience so far as been with bettas (m & f), guppies, neons, zebra danios, sword tails, and cae.

as far as which species, i'm leaning toward africans right now. some of the larger species. at least 7-9" as full adults

What are the tank dimensions for the 150? That would help better for suggestions. Clown loaches work better with Tangs than Malawis IMO. And if the tank is taller you could go with Rainbows or Cyps for the top if you used Tangs.

Nice tank to work with. Have you researched cichlids? What is your favorite looking? Look for ones you like and we can build around that. Do you have the tank running yet? If not wait for the substrate/deco until you decide.

with a tank that size i would say 15 small mbuna african cichlids from lake malwi (i know thats spelled wrong) and a school of upsidedown cats, and a BN pleco. Mbuna are pretty colorful and have alot of action, just make sure you have plenty of rock work.

If Africans is what you prefer you could have quite the setup in a tank that size. But if I were you i wouldn't rule out S/A cichlids, with a tank this size you could do something really cool and IMO there is nothing as kool as a bunch of big mean fish displaying their instincts by chasing down a school of minnows. But Africans are quite nice too, which ever you prefer im sure it will be a nice tank.
