What's a free-swimming tang. that can go well in a 10 gallon tank with a colony of multies and maybe a clown pleco?

Sorry, I wouldn't recommend any additions. There are some Tangnyikan barbs, and so on, but 10 gallons isn't much space, and the multis will want all of it, especially once they start spawning. And you won't need anything else - they're about the most fun fish on the planet next to SAEs.

There's a list of every Tanganyikan species at Fishbase.org, but my understanding is that yes, they're uncommon.

Ok then forget it. Could I have a pair of brevis with a colony of multis if I had a rock formation in the middle?

In a 10? No way. The only time mixing shellies works is in large tanks - most people say 4' or larger (I know I've tried it in less with terrible results) with not just a big rockpile in the middle but a rockdweller in the rocks to keep the shellies from venturing past.

What is it about the multis that isn't enough for you?

heh, putting me on a little guilt trip arent you? I just like having variety in my tank. Anyway, I don't think I'll do multis. Even 3 would be extremely expensive at $18 a fish. I'll get a pair of brevis and use the 10 for frogs.
