Here are the fish that I currently have with my discus:
- Large (very old) Angelfish
- Cardinal Tetras
- Neon Tetras
- Lemon Tetras
- Bala Sharks
- Clown Loaches
- Male Betta
- Pleco
- Flying Fox
- Celebese Rainbows
- Platy

My question is, I'm sure most of you know it before I ask, my sharks are getting too big and active for my discus so I think I'm going to swap the sharks to my rainbow tank and move most of the rainbows to the discus tank. I need to make sure that rainbowfish are generally good tankmates with my discus. I'm pretty sure they are but some confirmation would be helpful.

Thanks

Rummynose & Cardinal's will look really cool with Discus. Maybe some Corydoras as bottom feeders.

it is deffinately the BGK that is eating the neons, they are night feeders and will pick of the neons easily.
even without the neons your stocking seems quite high for a small tank.

hi, i'm impressed with what you've all been saying about discus. i have a cute discus myself, he got sick a little while back with white spot or something, but he is better now. i have him in a 38L tank with 2 drawf gouramis, a bristlenose cat, a ghostknife and 2 kuhli loaches. i DID have six neons but they got eaten . i don't know who by, but they are gone now and it isn't because i dont feed them enough. i want to replace the tetras with some other schooling fish, but i dont want them to get eaten. does anyone have any suggestions? :#(

That's interesting that your loaches approach your discus like that. I have never seen any of my loaches even pay any of my discus any mind. Yeah and big pleco's you have to be careful about. I read that they can attach themselves to a discus to eat their slim coat. The website I read it from, the guy said he's never seen it and thought that it was really rare. Later that day actually I went to one of my LFS's where they had a tank of 3 discus that they had inherited. I was always sad to see these discus because they were really really old (they were huge) and mistreated one was even so mistreated that it was always vertical, nose down, the LFS was trying to nurse them back to health. And that day when I went in there I actually caught the pleco that they had in the tank with them attach himself to the discus. I let them know of that. A week later when I went back, two of the three discus had died. Maybe coincidentally I'm not sure. But it does happen, so I make sure that my pleco is well fed that way the discus don't look like a snack.

I have 2 SAE's in my tank with my Discus and they have never shown any interest in the Discus at all.

I personally have loaches with Discus, but honestly they are not good tank makes. Few times a day the loaches will swim towards the Discu and "eat" on their body. The not eating the Discus I suppose, more like playing with them. But the Discus dun like it...

I agree on tetras and catfishs are good tankmates though...except big plec's of course. As well as SAE, they like to suck on the Discus

Yeah, that's kind of what I was afraid of, my Celebese do great with the Discus, but I need to get the bala's out of there, so I may just try and take some of the more mellow rainbows.

Thanks

I don't know about the larger and more boisterous rainbows, but the smaller ones (such as threadfins) should be okay. There's a chance that the hyper, larger rainbows would nip at the discus and intimidate them through their active swimming.

theres laods to chose from for discus but if ya talking oscars than its a little more restriced

i think any thing that likes the same pH and hardness and isn't too smaal would be o.k like some of the larger characins
i think rummy nose and blinde cave tetra would be o.k

Rays shouldn't be kept with discus unless you have a very large tank with lots of hiding places. Rays are active 24/7 and will disturb discus while they sleep. They will even rap themselves around the discus, stressing it out.

I have kept discus with clown loaches, cories, marble hatchets, rummy nose, neons, dwarf gouramis, rams, bristlenose, and whiptail cats. They were all doing very well together. I was hoping to keep some cockatoo cichlids with them later on, but tragedy struck and my heater's thermostat broke and boiled my fish. I've heard of people keeping them with angel fish. I have also seen discus in tanks with small rays, however, you would need a very large tank for the ray.

I've had problems with Corys at high temps (82f).
I have an S.A tank with:

Angels
Cardinals
Rummynoses
Rams
Dwarf Plecos
Corys

The only fish in the above list that I have problems with are the Corys.

The only thing I can think of is temp is too high. I have pristine water, feed variety of foods including sinking wafers.

Hi there,
I keep my Discus with Pearl Gouramis, a dwarf gourami, a juvi angelfish, platys, loaches (yoyos, queen, dojo, polka dot), ottos, 2 plecos, rummys, neons, glowlights, white cloud minnows, danios, 1 boesmani rainbowfish, adfs, corys, saes, rainbow shark, Bolivian Rams, etc.
Discus are hardier and less sensitive than people say. I have had nothing to see that discus are "shy and sensitive and tempermental" as I have heard said.

I think some festiums are too aggressive to be kept with discus. Some are very very mean almosty like small JDs and others are as peaceful as the discus themselves. I would reccomend getting some festiums if the tanks big enough but make sure you get them befor the discus and chuck (not literally ) some dither fish in and see how they react if they want to try to eat them dont keep them and if they dont youve got yourself a great pair

All loricariids are a good bet. I also like Nick's festivum idea--they seem to compliment them nicely in terms of shape, size, and contrast.
