the best way to define territories is using rocks, plant, driftwood and any sort of decoration

like in the past ive atempted to mke set territories with plants, drift wood, rocks, etc... and ive come to realize that no matter what you do the fish will make their own territory. some imes they will uproot plants and driftwood to make their own. but getting look that you want, then let the fish make thier territory.

Depends on what type of fish your keeping. Basically, for large american cichlids, a territory will most likely be a whole piece or part of a large ornament or place in the tank. Smaller americans (convicts, rams, other dwarfs, etc) would be a crevice, hole, or space they can fit inside. Usually more peaceful fish, like angels, will choose a plant or such. African cichlids (depending on what species) would use shells, slots in rocks, caves made from pots, basically anything they can fit themselves inside.

Usually you would use rocks (lace, granite, lava, beach, etc), wood (driftwood, petrified, beach), plants, and terracotta pots.

Here is a pic of my 125 gallon to give you an idea of how I've tried to make territories.

Clay pots also work very well. You can put them in whole, break them into smaller pieces, stack them up or pretty much whatever you want to do.

that was there when I bought the tank used. I'm not much of a Chevy fan myself...I just haven't gotten a razor blade to it yet.

thanks . The larger fish in the middle of the tank looking to the left is my 6.5-7" male Red Terror (A. festae). The orange fish to the right of him is a Red Devil. The chevy sticker is on the bottom-left hand side of the front of the tank.

I use a hair dryer to remove the pesky stickers that come with a new tank. It sorta loosens the bond and lets it peel off. (for glass tanks, not sure bout acrylic)

Inko, when I finally get around to it I'll have to try the hairdryer idea. Of course, I'll have to find a hairdryer first

I have caves and plants in my tank. The fish seem to be quite happy sitting in their own little cave. Though my Nicuraguense makes his own territorial boundary in the form of a massive mountain of sand in the middle of the tank

Hey Jason, I hate to contribute to the defacing of a Chevy sticker, but Zippo fluid will take off any sticky residue after the hairdryer gets the main part off.
Peace
