I have one in my 55, which is the same length, and honostly, i think it is nice in there. Not too small, not too big. I dont think 4 would be too much bioload for a 75 gallon tank, the angles would be more than anything.

I have no idea where the natural prey thing etc etc got started, but I assure you, it's not true. Firstly, most angels don't live anywhere near the peruvian amazon. Therefore, even if neons were the "natural prey of scalares, it'd only apply to the peruvian silver points, not the domesticated brazilian silver scalares commonly found in the aquarium trade today. Secondly, it has been reported by Annon's 2001 angelfish article that peruvian angels feed heavily on zoobenthos and bethic crustaceans, though they will occasionally feed on fry. Besides, you'd be hard pressed to find an angelfish that would be able to cram a 1.5" neon into it's mouth. I kept a school of neons in my 75 gallon until only a few weeks ago. Added even when the angels were full grown, the neons did fine. If angels were notorious for feasting on neons and cards, there wouldn't be so many people keeping the two together, especially many aquascapers all of which whom seem to adore cardinals. BTW, I don't know of any fish that prefers flake or other prepared foods to live, squirming prey, less they stalk schools of shrimp pellets in the wild.

EDIT: grammar

ABFs should do alright, provided the butterfly is small when added. We have ours at the store with baby congos, and they're both doing swell. Ours are constantly fed with livebearer fry, so I guess stuffing them full of food helps to get their minds off the tetras. I suppose you could also wean them onto insects while they're still young (they're primarily insectivores in the wild, anyways), so they wouldn't recognize your tets as being food worthy.

I think quite a number of people have had Angels eat full-grown neons or cards, once the angel hits full size. Natural prey of angels in the wild, and all that jazz.

ABFs I definitely wouldn't rust with neons or cards. They're quite opportunistic predators; we fed them guppies at the store. The Golden Wonders at least prefer flakes (well, pellets generally) to fish.
But, maybe another killi species would work better. E. dageti perhaps?

Angels have tiny mouths. They won't eat full grown cardinals and/or neons. Golden wonders (are those killies?), from your description, probably will, so I'd pass on them. As for your gouramis, listen to Vic--he's right. They aren't overly aggressive (certainly not moreso than angels), and should be fine with lar ger cardinals.

ABF=African Butterfly Fish.

How about some Golden wonders? Males pass 4" easily and I know of people who own 7" ones. could remotely be a problem with your Cards (big mouths) but probably not, cetainly no more than an angel.

What about a school of rummynose tetras? Eye catching and tend to be nice tight schoolers.

Or maybe a school or dwarf neon rainbowfish?

wouldnt be the only fish in the tank.

2-4 bolian rams
6-12 cories
6-12 small rainbows
10 card tetras
10 black neons
1 gibby pleco ( sailfin ) which is about 5 inches now
1 angelfish
tack on 4 gouramis to that list and thats a whole lot of bioload hehe

im currently trying to put together a 75g community and i plan on haveing a single angelfish. im looking for something 2-4 inches and likes to swim top/middle of the tank. i was thinking gouramis but most get to large and agressive. Dont like the dwarf looks. absolutly NO to hatchetfish. not interested in them at all but it keeps being recommended.
there will be other small tetras in the tank and rainbows. just trying to come up with something a tad bit larger to catch your eye.
any suggestions are welcome.

it is a 75g tank which is more then enough room for a few golds to chase and not get cornerd. i dont wanna put a lone gourami in there cuz it would seem like none in such a large tank and 4 would prolly be to much bioload. 2-3 the weaker fish would take a beating ya know. so its just hard to find the balance with so many fish lol

whoever told you they get 7" is wrong.. unless you have seen one in real life.. because i never have.

I have a 5 year old one, and he is only around 4.5"

Also, i have 4 in the same tank, they arent agressive, but they do chase each other.

i originally wanted a couple gold gouramis but researchign agression they are said to be terrors and also says on alot of places up to 7 inches. 7 inch fish will chomp pn cardnals and rainbow fish no problem. i might try a solo gold to see how it works just not sure yet. so hard to make a community with alot of variety without something getting killed or getting rants from other people.
just trying to prevent possible headaches later, i hate returning fish its agrivateing to like a fish in the tank then have to remove it from agression. ive had to do it a couple times now for other fish.

why not a blue/gold gourami?

If you have 1 in the tank, they are NOT agressive, and only get 5"

Get some ABF. Also, pearls are GREAT gouramis. They are beautiful, peaceful, and stay smaller than blues. However, they also usually don't inhabit the top strata of the water, at least IME.
