I have a breeding tank set up for two butterfly cichlds (apistogramma agassizii). they have soft acidic water (treated with peat and blackwater extract) and are at about 22 degrees. They have several caves and plants. There are also a couple of tetras in the tank, They are definately a pair so why wont they spawn?? any suggestions?

Well, there could be a couple of reasons. Firstly, Apistogramma agassizi is a harem breeder, meaning they breed in groups of one male to several females. Your male might not be willing to breed with just one female fish present.

Secondly, have you been conditioning the tank? Often, fish need to be fed lots of live and/or frozen food before they are willing to spawn. I believe this has to do with mimicking the rainy season in the fish's natural habitat, where food can be found in abundance. THe fish spawn during this season, too.

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."
