I just went to petco to buy a net and there was a pair of turquoise jewel cichlids with a bunch of fry. I did not know they bred so readily in captivity to even breed in a petco tank! Does anyone have any info about these fish? What size tank do they need, they are really pretty!

[link=here]http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/profiles/bluejewel.xml" style="COLOR: #FF3300[/link] is the fishprofiles.com profile of the Jewel cichlid. If you can't find all the information you're looking for just let us know what else you'd like to know about them. You can also do a quick google search for "Hemichromis bimaculatus".

its says they are hard to breed, but these had bred in 10 gallon at petco, is this abnormal? Also, are they usually hard to find or expensive fish?

Are you talking about in the profile on this site? It says it can be difficult to determine the gender but I don't see where it says they're difficult to breed. Honestly I don't know how hard they are to breed. I've only kept 1 jewel and that was several years ago. The little guy/gal jumped out of the tank.

Jewel cichlids are very, very common and therefore should be fairly cheap.

They were so pretty! I really want to get cichlids, but i already have rams in my twenty so i would like a bigger cichlid for another tank, but not that big of a tank (i have no space in my room!)

These guys breed very well and easily if they pair up. A regular sized 3ft tank makes a great breeding tank for them but you could probably do it in a 2ft?
They get quite agressive if they're breeding and attack other tank mates.
You could have one in a 3ft with other smaller cichlids if that's what you wanted.

you could probably get by with a pair in a 20 gallon. just keep an eye on them to make sure they don't become aggressive towards each other.

Long-term...no. You could grow a few out in a 10 though and move them to a bigger tank at around 2-3" or so.
