The LFS could only tell me that they were Victorians, but knew nothing of which kind. From what I've found looking around, they seem to be haps and the closest matches seem to be the Haplochromis sp. "Ugandan Fire" or young Xystichromis phytophagus (both found from this link: http://www.african-cichlid.com/Lake_Victoria.htm). One sports a spot on one side while the other does not, but they do have very similar coloration. Unfortunately 40G does not seem to be big enough for 2 of them with my current rock arrangement, so I may need to buy more rocks tomorrow.

the alpha is in front.. he gets dark lines on forehead and even the body at times. the other one is in back, which curiously maintains his color better than the alpha (when not being chased, the weaker one is well colored but the alpha goes back to this color or more pale) no, i'm not asking for an ID in the yellow lab:

They're nice fish.

I looked around and i found this pic. They look kinda similar.
Enterochromis sp.<<< I think this could be it. It has a very similar body shape.

You should check out this. http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/category.php?cat=16
You should be able to find the fish with that link.

Good luck finding the fish.

Also, here are some links to the fish you were thinking about.

Haplochromis sp. "Uganda Fire Red"
Xystichromis phytophagus

They could be a Xystichromis phytophagus. But I don't think they're the Uganda Fire Red.

hmm, what makes you think they are rock kribs the most?

i was leaning towards phytophagus as well, but obviously am not sure. another suggestion i have heard is the Haplochromis sp. 44 "Thick Skin", which is here:

I agree with the thick skin. I have keeps those haps in the past and the pic is very similar. They are quite common to buy where
I live.

I had keep them with Pundamilia nyererei and they where both awesome fish, not quite as nice as the nyererei.
