i always wondered how someone could buy a fish and not now what species it is, now i know..... i recently bought a african cichlid which appears to be of mbuna desent of course africans are my thing so what do i know..... anywho he/she is mainly a very dark blue and has a little amount of orange on the outer edges of the dorsal fins..... any help would be very much appreciated!

It sounds like a Metriaclima zebra. Although it could be a socolofi or lombardi. Also iloveoscars please dont type in all caps as indicates yelling.

um no it is all blue..... no stripes and only the outer edge is orange..... thanks for tho.... it has the body shape and face of the fish you mention however which leads me to believe it is in fact a mbuna

Perhaps Metriaclima callainos?

I agree with your original question, except I tend to mean not "how could they not know?" but "Why would anyone buy a fish not knowing what it is, when we all know how important it is to research and prepare before bringing home any living creature?"

well it looks somewhat like a Metriaclima callainos but it is darker and has orange egg spots and an orange rimmed dorsal fin

Well, it could certainly be a hybrid.

Have you tried looking through profiles, here and on Cichlid-forum? We can suggest species until the cows come home but it's a lot faster for you to go and look.
