A lot of Malawians love to dig, and sand can help with that. The only issues are keeping it well stirred and making sure they can't dig it out from underneath rock structures and topple them. Putting the rocks in (on top of egg crate or the like) first, siliconed together, and then the sane, helps with this.

Is sand good for what kind of cichlid? Certain fish like sand more than others, and the same applies for cichlids. For instance, shell-dwellers like sand much more than they do gravel, but eartheaters seem to like gravel more. It depends on the species of fish.

EDIT: Ah, I see. Yes, I agree with what LittleMousling said. Malawi cichlids can be diggers, and sand makes it easier for them to dig, and not frustrate the fish. Also, sand is easier to push back into place, providing it doesn't get picked up by the current.

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."

It's the Malawi forum, though, so I'd assume Malawians.

As mouth brooders, those you listed and other mouth brooders, do prefer the sand. As they make pits to spawn in. In the wild, the males usually have several pits for the females to chose from. Also, in the sand, the females will not pick up any rocks by accident as they will in a gravel bottom tank.

HTH....
