i own a red terror and how can you tell if one is a real red terror

for pics of the false red terror, or mayan cichlid (Nandopsis urophthalmus) click here

they are pretty easy to tell apart if you know what to look for. the mayan will have a very large spot at the base of the tail. this spot will be positioned near the center of the base and will be large enough to take up almost the entire base of the fish's tail. also, all vertical bars will go up and down...none of them intersecting.

the true red terror will have a much smaller spot at the base of the tail. this spot will be positioned in the upper portion of the base and usually will only take up no more than half of the base. also, the first pair of vertical bars past the gills will intersect and form a Y.
