Depends on the fish. With, say, Kribs and Angels, probably nothing bad. They have similar water preferances, like similar tanks (well-planted, hiding spaces), eat similar foods, and usually get along fine.

With, say, Keyholes and Tropheus? Utter mayhem and eventual (or fast) murder.

Depends on the fish. But on the whole it's best to keep them apart.

Think about it this way:
In South American the people speak mostly either Spanish or French, in Africa the people speak thousands of African Dialects.
The fish are the same- they speak different languages- in this case Body Language.
What you are doing when you mix those fish, is putting together a community of fish who cannot understand each other. Many signals could be misrepresented, for example, in Canada and the USA we use the "thumbs up" to mean all is good, in other countries- I think it was australia but I could be wrong, the thumbs up means "up yours". So essentially your fish will fight, hurt, and be overall stressed right out as they cannot understand each other. And espescially with the semi-aggressive and aggressive personalities of these fish.
I personally would NEVER EVER mix KRIBS with Any other NON-African fish. My sisters kribs not only killed and ate her angelfish, but her corys, some gouramis, 3 dwarf frogs, and several blue rams and gold rams. NOT a good Mix. The male krib on returning to the fish store, was herding and harrassing a tank full of other fish, including Auratus, Johanni, Lemon Yellows, Brichardi, and many other aggressive africans.
I would be careful indeed. Some fish are ok, such as Synodontis Catfish, and possibly some other bottom feeders and such- likely less problems arise from mixing them with non africans.
Anyway, like the person before me said: Utter Mayhem and Death will be your answer.

Just FYI, we aussies use the thumbs up as a good thing as well .

just beginning, like I said I could be wrong...I will have to dig up the old first year anthropology text and see what country they said was thumps up meant up yours
Or perhaps someone who lives in that country will say! i just now realize the hilarity of my analogy

[font color="#000080"]As just beginning said, we use the thumbs up to mean all is good, well most of us aussies do. My mum still thinks that the thumbs up means "up yours" so when she see people giving her the thumbs up, as a friendly jester she gets all cranky about it

Also most south american and african cichlids can't be kept together because of their different water requirements, PH etc.
