I'm not a cichlid expert but I've never heard of that one. Not a thick lipped gourami by any chance?

What did it look like...color, size, etc? Did they have any other info like where it was from, temperament, potential size?

i'm usually pretty good with cichlids but i have NO IDEA how big these guys get, what they eat, or where they come from.

right now they're about the size of a full grown platy. the coloration is quite difficult to explain because they are a yellow fish with thick brown vertical strips and when they swim into the light, they're fins are a shiny green. it's really weird, but it's a pretty cool fish. the body structure resembles a peacock cichlid, so i'm assuming it's a lake malawi cichlid...

I think the fish you are referring to is the haplochromis euchilus. It is an african cichlid from lake malawi, so that probably describes the unique coloring.

Males get to about a foot, and females to 10". Though 55 gallons are reccomended, I would go for a 75 gallon or tank with at least 14" in width.

Like most africans, males should be outnumbered by females.

Unlike other haps, this species require more algae than the others.

Edit:
Check out this link for pics.

In addition to what inkodinkomalinko suggested here are a couple more possibilities; Melanochromis labrosus and Placidochromis milomo

I was just at my local petsmart and I was surprised by the nice selection of cichlid, pleco and some the other specialty fish they have started to stock.

Well anyway if you where at a petsmart and saw the tag say "fat lipped cichlid" and it was the same cichlid species in the tank at the petsmart here named fat lipped cichlid it was a Electochromis milomo.

Eclectochromis Lablosus is the one with vertical stripes and a hint of yellow.

ah...that makes sense.

so i'm assuming their lips "enlarge" as they mature? the ones at the store still have "normal" sized lips.

Not seeing a pic it is hard to determine the fish you are talking about. There are actually many different cichlids with big lips, and several with extra large lips that can actually curl all the way around and touch their face. Some have horizontal bars, while others have vertical ones. And some lose these bars when they mature and color up fully. Ask about the scientific name of the fish at the fish store. They should have knowledge of it.

A fat lipped cichlid is one who has had botox or collagen injections (Sorry, couldn't resist).
