Hi,
i have an aquarium with angels in it. Are any cichlids compatible with them? I like the look of the blue and yellow acaras and also the eartheaters look interesting (geophagus spp.). Thanks for any help!

Much depends upon the size of your tank. I keep apisto cacatuoides and pelvicachromis pulcher with angels, but in a big tank - they get along fine. I would not try the combo in a small tank though.

I know many report sucess keeping Blue or Bolivian rams with angels. The Bolivians seem to be hardier and more tolerant water wise.

i have a 170 litre tank (4 foot long) and at the moment i don't have many fish in there. I am planning on having 4-6 angels in there.

I have to agree on the key holes. I keep three males together that dont even show the slightest bet of aggression twords each other. Ive kept single kribs with angels with no problems. And young acaras work out well. Ive had problems with the larger acaras picking on the angels though. I keep rams with my lone angel right now, i dont think rams have any aggression in them from what ive seen. I recomend gouramis to go with your angels in your 4 foot tank. I think the two work very well together.

Yellow acara should be ok, I'm not sure but a blue acara might get a bit too large for your tank.

Keyholes and German or Bolivian are good choices, maybe even rainbows. I've kept festivums and two female kribs with angels without problems.

Geo. Brasiliensis would probally be your best bet if you went with an earth eater. They are on the smaller side of the Geophagan sp. with alot of color.

Geo. brasiliensis can grow in the 10" range and are among the more aggressive of the Geophagus cichlids.

Hi,
Thanks for the replies. I bought 2 bolivian butterfly cichlids today, but i am still interested in the yellow acaras (i looked at some blue ones and they looked a bit feisty for my tank). I spoke to a guy at my lfs about the Geophagus surinamensis - he seemed to think that if i bought a small one (they had ones about 5cm long) and it grew up with the angels and tetras it wouldn't be a problem. What do you think? Also, are they slow growers??
ok thanks again for your help guys!

Misty ive heard of people doing that with angels, put neons in first and then angels and have them grow up with the neons. and never harm them. now the real question you should ask is, if the idea is wrong and doesnt work can you live with the results.

id go with festivums. extremely docile and very owner responsive. they make a very good addition to an angelfish tank.

Hi, thanks for the replies everyone. I'll keep in mind all of your ideas, as i still have plenty of room in my tank. Sin in Style: Can i live with the results? I think i would keep a very close eye on my fish and if they ate anything they would be into my spare tank straight away - i would hate to think my poor little neons were someone else's lunch. By the way - my angels (i have two atm) have never looked twice at my neons - but i guess i'll have to wait till they are fully grown

I have keyholes with angels and they seem to get on fine. The keyhole is very peaceful.
