my 6 foot tank is almost complete - rummies, pencilfish, sterbai corys, royal whiptails, and black phantoms, it's heavily planted and it's time to add cichlids (for pictures, see my post in the photobooth). i'm tossing up between blue rams, checkerboards (dicrosis filamentosus) and dwarf cockatoos (apistogramma cacatuoides). any thoughts on which you'd choose and why?

blue rams looks really good in a nicely planted tank.. they are a smaller cichlid but still very nice and show great colours.. you could have 2 pairs?.. another alternative would be a pair of Bolivian rams..
rams are a nicer fish for a community tank.. i think!!

Bolivian Rams would be my choice. They are hillarious mine flared at a 7in texas in a tank next to him.

I'd go with the rams. They're the most colorful of the three, are a little hardier than the checkerboard cichlids, and they have the most personality in my opinion. It's fun to watch rams interact with each other, which they do quite often and with great gusto. Their actions are funny, especially when you consider that they take themselves so seriously.

For color and personality I'd go with the blue rams

Sounds like a very nice tank.

I'd go with the Apistos. You could have a terrific harem in there, and a lot of interest between the fish - territorial disputes, spawning behaviors, a kind of small-cichlids-in-a-large space aspect most people don't get to see. Not that it wouldn't be similar with the Rams, but ....

Add a couple of Rams, they are very beautiful & they'll be more than happy in a planted tank.

I second the apistos. As LM said, they're harem breeders, and in a 6 foot tank with so much floor space you'd really be able to see them doing what they would do naturally. Start off with 2 males and a few females and I bet you'd see some great behavior. Besides, what's not to like about their coloring as compared to rams?
