Mine is about 8" now. I've had him 6 months. He begs for food and comes half up out of the water when I open the lid. It's a little trick of his. I have him in with a black shark and discus. They both know who is the boss. He temps them to eat before he is done. He creeps right up on them and snaps his jaws to scare them away. It's a sight to see. A great fish with alot of personality.

I have a red tiger oscar. He lives in a 75 gallon planted tank (java fern, swords, crypts, corkscrew val, etc) with and emperor 400 and penguin 330 running on it. I probably have the cleanest oscar tank in town (no nitrate at all, ever). He shares his home with giant danios, a bn pleco, and some "failure" guppies. By failure I mean the ones that fail to meet the genetic standard I am trying to achieve. Of course he only eats a few then keeps the rest as pets. The oscar is quite the character. When he's not trying to bite me during feeding time, he lets me scratch his head, he tries to attack the cats through the glass and can be found watching tv with the rest of us. He a great fish.

well i would but now thats all i hear now i am teaching him to jump higher, at the moment he can get his whole body out of wthe water, but for some reason he scairs me when he does but do u think he will eat my full grown gupps? i want to put him in 1 of my ponds but im not sure if i should put him in the shallow long pond or the deep short pond? in the deep 1 i have 5 guppies and i think 4-5 sword tails 1 who i just got and who i am almost positive is pregnant and in the long pond i have 1 tad pole who has legs well little ones anyway and my 3 in turtle (freo head to back of shell, i have hiding spots for them but i have to get 1 for big red if he goes in there, i think i will move the tad pole but he is taling care of an algea problem, or should i make him his own? so many options so little time

i have an 7 inch oscar i had him since he was about 3 inches. a cousin of mine bought him for me when i started fish keeping. several fishes have gone since then and hes the oldest fish that i have. he scared me about two months ago when he got ill. i couldnt diagnose the symptoms he turned completely brown stop eating and was listless. i thought he was a gonner he was in that condition for over a week. but as a last ditch effort i treated him with antibiotics and the next day he showed improvements got his color back and started eating again. oscars are cool fishes. my oscar is a ruff rider

Oscars rock!
Our two guys never fail to make me laugh and get my attention and we have 5 tanks in this room alone.
Both of them seem to learn something new every week, they're extremely intelligent and I love them to bits, can you tell?
Spend enough time with these beautiful fish and they will reward you with many years of love and fun

Isn't the Gold brand supposed to be for color and not a stapple?

I've always used Hikari gold as the staple diet for my cichlids. they seem to be perfectly healthy and happy though I think you are right in that it is really meant as a supplement and the staple, excel and bio-gold are more appropriate as a staple diet. not 100% sure though.

mine is suprisingly not messy at all!! it eats it's pellits (the gold brand) then goes back to hiding, but even if he asks for food i dont always giv it to him

Isn't the Gold brand supposed to be for color and not a stapple? Just asking, because I don't know.

I had my 4" Oscar for about 2 weeks now and he is already trained to come up to the top when I open the lid. He knows when foods coming. Grabs it out of my fingers. He's a little more smart about it than the other cichlids (JD, Convict and GT).

Note! They eat and eat and eat and eat and eat!!! Did I say they EAT! My tiger Oscar is always hungry! 24/7! And they are a bit messy, I have to do above average number of water changes per month. And watch for it jumping out of the tank. My has once but I guess it learned its lesson!
