Males tend to have more black on their ventral fins.

The above link should help out some, as well.

There is no true way to tell the sex without venting them. The amount of black on the fins and egg spots are all false indicators.

Eh, I don't know. The black on the lower fins can be an indicator of sex, it just isn't accurate all the time. I guess that labs are sort of like German rams in this respect, as you can often sex them by the pink on the belly. Again though, that doesn't work often enough to be a good indicator.

Yes, venting is a better way to sex fish, if you're willing to take the time to catch your fish. It does stress the fish out a lot, so it really isn't necessary unless you plan to breed your fish, or are looking to establish a specific male/female ratio for your labs. The following article on venting will help you if you do choose that route:

for me the blackness of the lower fins has always worked when buying labs.black for male clear to a tinge of black for females.

Not only the blackness of the lower fins, but males "tend" to have a black "stripe" across the eyes.

yes i'm with above. Males usuaully get a black line running across their eyes, aswell as getting darker fins.
Also dominant males when larger get small amounts of blue on their lower fins.
