I'm thinking about selling my prize freshwater fish - sarcocheilichthys sinensis. I would like to get some suggestions as to what a fair asking price would be for it.

As you can imagine the odds of finding someone who can house a foot-2 foot long coldwater carp is hard to come by. Heck I'd like to know where you got them from but I'll be settle

You're probably the only person on this continent that keeps one. Have you considered donating it to a good home versus selling it? If you do sell it what fair price could you assign it. Too low and you risk a very rare fish being butchered by some amature. Too high and it won't move. I wouldn't sell it for less than 100, but then again I wouldn't sell it at all. I would give it to a public aquarium or to a known good home. What an awesome fish.

To be honest I don't think this species gets that big. The one I have now is about 4 inches long, and hasn't grown in the past year at least. I've had him for about 4 years now. He lives in a 55.

Possible that he has been mis-identified or do you think the limited info out there is wrong?

In the case of a smaller species I would still, if you are going to sell it, put it up on aquabid with an opening bid of 100.00-130.00 and specify that the user must be from an acceptable fish background. You should be publishing more information about keeping that rare fish

Either way I'd bid on it in a heartbeat if I was in the position to. But look at it this way. Koi, expensive bettas, and some loaches/catfish etc routinely sell for up to that, you should be safe starting there.

Why are you thinking of selling it, BTW?

Its his last FW tank, and wants to focus completely on his SW tanks now (atleast from what I gathered on the ReefCentral thread).

I think he just wants to use the tank for a $1200 anemone

Rare, really??? I have seen these guys at a local pet store near Lima, Ohio. They call them Banded or Belted?! Sharks. They were about 4" long. They were with Black sharks and Hi Fin Sharks as well. I believe, but not swearing the price was for the "Banded Sharks" was $12.99. I will try to get more info for you because I sell my Angels to them and see them about every other week. Later

If they're the same ones, I'd love to know. Could you get a picture for me please? That would be awesome.

PS ~ What is the name of the store in Lima?

Either My Pets Inn or DOTS. I think it was DOTS though.

I can't see many people paying much more than $10-15 for a fish with so little demand. If people want it enough you might be able to charge $30 for it... I am unsure of the demand on this fish.:%)
