It should be ok, although I myself would want a little more variety. Maybe a blue gourami for the top?

That would probably be an awesome tank. Just understand, though, you're not leaving yourself a lot of room to add some variety should you want to do so later on down the road. This may be a problem if you plant your tank, or should you want any type of algae eater. Otos would be out; I've even had a bristlenose get picked on by tiger barbs. If you're cool with that, by all means go for it

The tank will work, but make sure that your current desire for tiger barbs will stay consistent in the future, because there is no way to really mix it up without selling fish back. Maybe start out with about 15 Tigers and an RTS and see if you still want more after that...

PM/email/msg me if you have any questions/comments regarding me or my knowledge or if you want me to read a thread.

I still think that if you cut back a few barbs you could have a gourami. They are less aggressive in schools, or so I've heard.

i would mix 2 different types of barbs, like 12-15 tigers and 5 golden or rosey barbs. i noticed when i had only tiger barbs they wern't very active because the tank was all theirs even when i added a rainbow shark. but when i added rosey barbs it stirred the tank up.

I think that placing 20 tigerbarbs and a gurami in the same tank could be a little risky... (for the gurami!). As fin-nippers, the barbs may tear it appart...!!! Yet if there are 20 of them, they may get busy chasing each other and leave the gurami alone... it's your call..!!!

Greetings,

Apostolis

Welcome Apostolis, and you did mention a good point. While a large number of Tiger Barbs, such as 12 or more, tend to nip only in their group as they establish a pecking order amongst themselves, you do need to keep wary that nipping may still occur to whatever other tankmates are present, whether they be an RTS or a gourami, with its beautiful long finnage...

PM/email/msg me if you have any questions/comments regarding me or my knowledge or if you want me to read a thread.

I've had lots of tiger barbs in my years of fish keeping and quite honestly maybe i've been lucky but in my tanks i've never even seen one of my barbs nip another fish, and i have kept them with gouramis before.

Thanx iltat!!!

Although tiger barbs move in all three zones of the tank, if I was to put other fish, I would return 10 tigerbarbs to an LFS and I would think of something like the hatchet fish for the top (6-8 of them!) and 1 male - 3 females of Apistogramma Cacatuoides and 4-5 Corys!!!

Greetings,

Apostolis

PS: if you plan to put any hatchet fish, make sure the top of your tank is firm as in nature the FLY really high in order to avoid any predators' attacks!!!
