I purchased a school of six tiger barbs yesturday and this morning I noticed that the tails of my rainbows were nipped. I then watch and I see a tiger barb sneek up and bite the tail of the rainbow. I then moved them to my 10 gallon. They seem fine in that tank. I will leave them until I can get a species tank. Why did the tiger barbs behave this way?

Also there is one female that is much larger than the others. She is just over an inch.

Tiger barbs just tend to be nippy fish. They like to attack the fins and tails of slower fish, or those with long fins. It is just what tiger barbs do best.

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."

Its their nature to shoal and the shoal needs to be 'ordered'. Dominance plays a vital role in their make-up and they achieve this by harassing each other to form a pecking order (no pun intended!). In their pursuit, they will nip at any other fish that crosses their path, and particularly long finned species... it must be the colour or the movement.
How did you sex the larger of the group?

The largest is a female because it is fat and is not going crazy fighting with the others.
