Is this normal? They aren't always together but about half the time they are. I got a 29 gallon tank on Thursday and got it set up on Friday so this is all still new to them.

It is actually common for shoaling fishes to hang out with others that look like themselves, especially if they are few in number and they are in a new environment. They are trying to seek anything that remotely resembles safety. Another example is clown loaches, which might shaol with tiger barbs.

When I add new schooling fish to my tank they frequently attempt to school with my already established bucnh. At first some of my longterm residents are a little upset but they usually get over it within a few days.
